VOLTERRE LOVES: Black Coffee
Having began his DJing career in 1995, Black Coffee is nowhere near new to the game, but has been quickly reaching new levels of popularity in the U.S. (he played in Coachella's Yuma Tent in 2016 and had other U.S. shows throughout the year, though usually appearing in Europe) and we couldn't be more pleased.
An innovator in the electronic music genre with his strong influences from his South African background, Black Coffee's musical style is described as "Afropolitan House: home-brewed but future focused." Among the excess of electronic DJs that exist today, those that can draw true inspiration from unusual, non-electronic musical genres and infuse it with deep, personal meaning are few and far between. And when a musician can take this inspiration and bring the world something we've never seen or heard before? That's creative gold.
In addition with the killer "We Dance Again" and melodic "Come With Me," he's got a remix of Alicia Keys' "In Common" that helped him reach the attention of the mainstream. Just before its release, he won the BET award for "Best International Act: Africa," a well-deserved recognition.
